My Students

Elementary students all have dreams to contribute to society. When asked, they want to be doctors, teachers, and engineers. They come to school with a smile on their faces and hope for their futures. However, some elementary students have the disadvantage of living in an area where support to help them achieve is lacking.

This is what my students face almost every day in their elementary school years.

I teach 25 wonderful students in South Los Angeles. Despite these challenges, my students still have hope for their futures. How can we continue to keep these students with positive attitudes despite the achievement gaps they face?

My Project

I work in South Los Angeles. Children in this area tend to be more obese because of the lack of exercise. There is a lack of green space and students spend 50% more of their time doing sedentary activities then they did in the 1970’s. My 5th graders lack the basic skills to throw, catch, or kick a ball with confidence and skill. By 5th grade my girls have already tuned out when we do Physical Education. It is difficult to engage a full class to participate in Physical Education with only one class ball .

By breaking my class into small groups of two or three students in a non competitive will encourage students to develop the skills and confidence to better succeed in Physical Education.

We will work on kicking, throwing, and catchinhg skills with structured lessons and not just rolling out a ball to have them play kickball. The student that can’t kick well has their negative outlook reinforced when she kicks the ball weakly. The student that doesn’t catch well will have that negative attitude reinforced when he drops the ball. The student will continue to dislike Physical Education that could lead to lifelong health issues.

The problem is the lack of PE equipment. We are forced to play games like kickball because the class has only one ball. I would like to give my students a better opportunity to enjoy playing outdoors and not spend their time just looking at their screen. Thank you.
