Health On Wheels? Is it possible that something as simple as a scooter could make a huge difference in a child's health? YES!
Hello, I teach Health and Physical Education in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. We have an enrollment of 310 K-6th grade students. We serve a very high percentage of children whose families are below the poverty level, with 78% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
I am alarmed at the escalating and serious public health issue of youth obesity. 2006-2007 records show that 37% of our 4th and 5th grade students were overweight and another 15% were at risk. The Leslie County School System presently does not have funds to finance any projects other then the basics. For many years the Physical Education Dept. has been allowed only $250.00 per year for equipment. That is less than $1.00 per student per year!
We are in dire need of all types of fitness equipment. We have hopes of purchasing 3 Roller Racers and one caddy. This equipment is very sturdy and one of the best for developing upper body strength in young children. More importantly, it's so much fun that children don't realize how much exercise they're getting!
Please consider funding this equipment request. Your help will ensure that my students receive some of the fitness equipment that is needed to motivate them toward physical activity and therefore reducing the obesity crisis.
