Health and Wellness to Empower Young Learners- Part 2!

I need training to provide my students with quality social emotional learning and yoga lessons to empower them to address inequity in their community.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Killeen's classroom raised $998

My Students

My students face many social, emotional, and economic challenges. Over half of them are English learners and 90% come from low income families. Many have come to the United States as refugees, fleeing intolerance or other hardships at home and are now learning to live in a very diverse community.

My students are developing into reflective learners who seek out opportunities for action.

They are very aware of the inequity that exists in the world and they are determined to make positive change.

My class is caring, curious, and motivated. They love team-building activities and practicing their leadership skills. They enjoy math and the Zumba breaks that come afterwards. They get lost in stories and beg for one more chapter. They love using technology to develop research skills and to share what they've learned. They are full of joy, endlessly silly, and incredibly thoughtful young citizens of their community.

My Project

I would like to attend a training with Breathe for Change this spring. The 16 day training focuses on educator wellness, social emotional learning strategies, and yoga. I will have the opportunity to develop a wellness program for my students that will address the trauma and stress they have encountered this past year in their community due to the pandemic and the political/social tensions that they feel the effects of but don't always have the skills to fully understand.

Breathe 4 Change provides a unique program that empowers teachers and students to be change makers in their communities.

Through studying the science of how their brains and bodies work, and practicing wellness strategies, students will develop the skills to address their pain. When they are able to cope with these issues, they can better focus on developing their interests or skills. My hope is that by successfully removing these barriers, students will develop into citizens who will end up solving the problems that created them in the first place.

I have been teaching yoga to my class for several years as part of a science unit on anatomy, adaptations, and animal intelligence. This training will allow me to certify as a certified yoga teacher (CYT-200) and register with Yoga Alliance. I am looking forward to developing my own yoga practice while also improving the instruction that I provide to my students.
