Help me give my students healing through play. Play therapy and sand tray therapy will give my students a voice where they do not believe they have one.

My Project
As the student support counselor at a junior high school, I often am able to hear some of the most heart-wrenching stories and then be able to watch my student persevere through those stories and experiences. We deal with pretty heavy stuff in my office, but my students (or my kids, as I affectionately call them) know that my office is a safe place for them and that I am an adult they can truly trust.
Students are expected to perform academically even if their world was turned upside down from traumas faced in their lives.
Some of my students are overwhelmed by their life stressors (homelessness, illnesses, hurricanes and ice storms, displaced families, academic pressures, and more) but do not have the time or tools to manage these feelings. As an educator, it is my job to ensure they are successful academically, but sometimes, we need to take care of their emotional health first.
I provide my students with individual counseling and check-ins. Also, I run groups throughout the week. I use games to help students build peer relationships while also being creative and incorporating the Healing the Experience of Trauma: A Path to Resilience. I hope to create high self-efficacy in my students so they can grow, thrive, and become active and productive members of society. Students often express their feelings, self-regulate, and cope in various ways. For example, students often use sensory items as a way to calm down or expressive arts such as coloring or painting to express their feelings. Sand trays can help create a more comprehensive picture of the world in which students live and help counselors enter the subjective world of their students.
