Healing Through Loss

Help me give my students a small set of paints so they can create art with quality materials even if they are stuck at home.

My Students

I have some of the most talented, creative students, and I feel blessed that I get the opportunity to be their art teacher. High School aged students are at such an important stage of their artistic development, where they are developing confidence in their own unique expression and how they view the world.

Unfortunately the stressors from the pandemic have negatively impacted many students, and created an overall unease in their lives.

That is why it is so important to me to create a safe place for them to take a break from the heaviness of the world, and just create.

My students are resilient, strong, and have something unique to share with this world. I am truly lucky to know them.

My Project

COVID-19 has prevented many of our students from going to school, attending extra curricular activities, and has brought loss to many of our students lives. Whether big or small, loss is painful, and our students need a healthy way to process their experience. Their anxieties, depression, lack of motivation, and boredom, can be described as grief; and that's where art can help process these emotions.

The six stages of grief are:

1. Denial "This virus won't affect me."

2. Anger "You're making me stay home and are taking away my activities."

3. Bargaining "If I stay home for a week, things will be better after that right?"

4. Sadness "When will ever end? I miss my friends, and am so bored."

5. Acceptance "We might not go back to school. I need to figure this out."

6. Meaning "I have grown and connected with people in ways I wouldn't have before."

I want my students to know it's okay to feel grief right now, and if they can express how they are feeling, it can help them move forward. The theme of this project "Healing Through Loss," will prompt them to paint what they are missing the most right now in their lives. They can also paint how they are personally going through the grieving process (including any of the above steps). By expressing their emotions though creating art, they can move towards healing and closure for what they feel they have lost.

However, many students are still stuck at home, and do not have the needed supplies to complete their assignments. These personal paint sets will help young artists stay on track while at home, and create beautiful healing works of art! Thank you.
