Some of my students have suffered unimaginable traumas and I want to have the resources to help them heal and cope. I work with whole class, small group and individuals. Whole classes sometimes make emotion collages or vision boards with card stock paper, glue, & sharpies. Small groups make breathing sticks with pipe cleaners and beads and worry dolls with yarn and fabric. My peer mentors teach younger students how to play cards game and other collaborative games to increase social skills and self esteem.
Art has a tremendous healing power.
Through expressive arts, students have increased empathy, coping skills, improved self awareness and hope. Various craft supplies will help me continue to provide expressive art therapy to our most vulnerable students. Some students are non-verbal, do not speak English or are on the spectrum. Art therapy is a unique way to connect on a creative level.
