Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a K-2 Literacy Coach I interact with hundreds of children on a daily basis. After meeting with child after child I have arrived to the realization that many of our children are trapped in their tragic and lonely worlds. It hurts because they have so much to give and so much to say however they don't have an outlet to help them express themselves.
Through various interactions I realized our children need to learn how to communicate; how to capture the moments of their lives; how to use technology to transform and present the deepest parts of their being. They need this to release them from all the pain they store inside their hearts.
As I listened to one of my student's share a story about her mother screaming at her and all she remembers was her mother saying, "I hate you! I wish you were never born!" I looked into her eyes and felt the pain and disappointment; she was broken inside and that's when it hit me... Our kids could benefit from filming their stories and turning them into documentaries to heal themselves and others. We can use a camcorder to capture their stories through the educational process while helping them deal with their pain. The children can work on projects that will help them create movies of their lives particularly with our "Personal Narrative", "Memoir", and Memory Picture Books units of study.
I believe having access to a camcorder will spark an interest within them to vividly express themselves and share a part of their souls without feeling intimidated. I know that a camcorder will make a difference; I know our children need exposure to various forms of expression; and a camcorder will afford them with the opportunities they need to succeed academically and emotionally.
In the end, I want you to think about that little girl who's mother broke her heart and think about the story she has to tell and how using a camcorder to create a documentary will help her and other children just like her heal emotionally.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
