My Students
Our Fabulous 4th graders are some of the kindest, most creative, genuine humans that you will ever meet. They are the foundation of our growing Buffalo, NY charter school.
As the youngest members of our learning community, the experiences and relationships that they develop at our 4-12 school define the rest of the elementary, middle, and high school experience.
Our student population is mostly Black, which means that despite the fact that these children are as unique, brilliant, and exceptional as any other child, the systems that we operate in every day do not see these children as assets. Therefore, as teachers, we need to do more. We need to give our kids everything that we can to close that opportunity-not achievement-gap so that they are equipped and empowered to be the next generation of thinkers, makers, and doers that our world needs so desperately.
My Project
Buffalo Collegiate Charter school is entering into hybrid learning, which means that social distancing rules must be followed. Despite the rules and the distance and the strangeness, we need to create safe and beautiful spaces that will make our students feel confident in wanting to continue to learn.
Flexible seating and a large, inviting carpet will create spaces that will allow students to move and learn while adhering to safety guidelines.
They will not be trapped in seats for 8 hours a day, but will be allowed to choose places to move their bodies to engage and grow in healthy learning spaces made with them in mind.
