Headphones Needed to Learn!

Help me give my students headphones so they can hear the words. This will help them learn to read and stop falling behind in reading.

My Students

Our school has the highest ESL population in our district, with 33% of our students speaking English as their second language. Both parents usually work and do not speak English so there is little or no support from home for homework.

Teachers are their lifeline to learning and their only English contact, the only place where they can learn anything academic, be it math, science or reading.

Students depend on us to give them an education without help from outside sources.

School is their only learning environment in English. They depend on teachers to provide the best academic environment that they can. Teachers need every minute to count because it is the student's only chance at learning.

Math is especially challenging because they do not understand the English words in the directions. Give them straight numbers and they excel! Give them directions and they struggle and fall behind.

My Project

Right now I have 24 headphones and 27 students in my class. Headphones are a vital in accessing the computer programs that teach reading. Two of my students are using headphones we received for free when the NAEYC came and tested. Five of the headphones have only one side that works. One has a cut cord that a student cut with scissors and we tied in a knot. Four headphones have lost the foam that makes it comfortable and three are hard plastic and hurt the students ears when the try to use them. It is a huge gamble for the students to get a working and comfortable pair of headphones.

We use headphones daily with MyLexia and with 26 headphones for 27 students, I hope that one student is absent so we will have enough for everyone.

Learning is inaccessible without headphones, so the last person to the drawer does not get to learn.

This grant will give every student a chance at learning in my classroom. Even the child that doesn't want to learn and uses the excuse that there are no more headphones will receive a chance to learn. Students are worried they will get headphones that only work on one side, are cut or hurt their ears. They need to know that all of them work! Especially when they are learning English for the first time. It needs to sound right!
