My Students
When you enter my school, you will see our five guiding principles posted proudly in the lobby: be responsible, be respectful, be safe, be kind, be inclusive. Students and teachers celebrate each other for exemplifying these principles.
The students at my school are proud of their community, and they work hard every day to be responsible, respectful, safe, kind, and inclusive.
As a speech therapist in a big school in Boston, I work with a wide range of students from kindergarten through eighth grade. In a day in my speech room, I see second graders practicing perspective taking, fifth graders working on inferencing skills, first graders using high tech devices to communicate, and middle schoolers learning to advocate for what they need to succeed at school.
My Project
Many of the students I work with, as well as other students in my school, have trouble participating in school activities that are loud, such as assemblies, performances, and field day. Many students also have trouble focusing during tests because of noise, such as classes walking by in the hallway or loud traffic outside.
These headphones will help my students engage in school activities that they may otherwise choose to sit out.
My goal is to create a sensory lending library in the room I share with the OT. It will contain sensory tools we already have and use, such as weighted clothing, therabands, and theraputty, as well as these new noise-reducing headphones. Students and teachers will borrow these items from our room as they need them.
The speech room is also in need of whiteboard markers, as we use these constantly in therapy!
