My Students
The ability to read and the love of reading is the foundation to all future learning. In kindergarten, some come into class not knowing how to read at all.
I have 25 active and fun-loving kindergarteners with a wide range of reading abilities.
Some can read simple sentences. Others are just learning phonics. Still others don't know how to read at all. All these kids come from wonderful families, but sometimes, parents are simply not trained in how to most effectively teach their kids this invaluable skill.
My Project
In the computer age, technology is a powerful tool in the classroom. Our school has been fundraising for computer upgrades and we are also in the process of purchasing the Raz-Kids on-line literacy program. I am requesting these headsets with microphones, as the program cannot be used without them. The program can read out loud to the students, which will allows kids to grow in their listening skills. It can also allow kids to read into the mic, and then the program will play back what they read. Instant feedback will help them grow quickly in their reading skills. Students learning phonics can also use it to learn their alphabets and sounds.
Due to the California budget crisis, our school has been greatly limited by our ability to use technology as a teaching aid.
The software along with the headsets will be useful in helping me give individualized attention to each student. I can work with a group of students while another group is working on the computer. This reading program will in effect be adding multiple virtual reading assistants into the classroom.
