Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Most students at my school arrive 3-4 years behind grade level in their reading. My students, who have learning differences, are even further behind. This year 3 of my students are still struggling to read and spell words using the short "e" and "i" sounds (for example: "get" and "him"). Yet, they do not let their challenges define their academic success or sense of self. They are focused, funny, hardworking and willing to put in the effort to work towards grade level proficiency!

My students' learning disabilities do not affect their cognition; to succeed they only need the right accommodations to access the curriculum.

My students are able to compose thoughtful and persuasive essays, ask and answer in-depth questions about a text and offer evidence for all of their claims. Headphones allow them to do this without being impeded by their lower reading and writing skills. Google Read and Write allows all of their assignments to be read aloud to them and it scribes their essays for them! All they need is a pair of headphones (with a microphone) and a Chromebook and they are all set to complete even the most challenging of assignments! Please help me give my students this access to their education.
