My Students
There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new age technology, but if the teachers themselves are not able to bring it into the classroom and make it work, then it fails. ~Nancy Kassebaum, U.S. Senator
We are a second grade classroom of 21st Century learners who are integrating technology into our learning so that we can create, innovate, and collaborate.
Our classroom recently received a grant for 1:1 mobile devices. Each child has a laptop on which they have been writing, sharing their work with peers, giving feedback to others, publishing our writing, and practicing math and language skills. We have also been learning about digital citizenship, and even a little bit about coding (writing computer programs).
Our school is in a district that will have 1:1 mobile devices for every student by 2015. We are the pioneers in this program, and these students will mentor other students and teach them what they have learned about using technology in the classroom.
My Project
While we have the computers, our little hands get confused with the keypad. Mice would make it easier to navigate the websites and apps within our learning and shorten the time it takes to accomplish learning tasks.
Some of our apps have sound. We play learning games to practice skills taught in the classroom. In addition, we sometimes watch videos to enhance our learning. For example, at Thanksgiving, we took a virtual tour of the Mayflower. We also designed presentations to showcase our learning and use sound in those. My students are currently making a prezi presentation to use during their student-led parent conferences as report card time. Sound can be distracting to those around us and make it tough to concentrate. Therefore, the headphones will aid in focus and help us work more efficiently and politely.
These students are on the cutting edge of 21st century learning.
They are learning valuable skills that they will need during the rest of their lives. Use of technology and knowing how to use it, adapt it, teach others, and think creatively are essential to today's learners.
