This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a K-8 school in East Oakland functioning as a center of health within the neighborhoods surrounding it, providing wrap-around services in education, health, housing, and job training. The long-term goal is to create a model for urban education that prioritizes the needs of youth and families as the pathway to building healthy and sustainable communities across the U.S. and around the world.

The name of the our school was inspired by the book of poetry based on the writings of Tupac Shakur released in 1999.

This vivid image captures the need to celebrate the tenacity and will of the rose that against-all-odds, finds a way to grow in the inhospitable and toxic environment of the concrete that it might transform the concrete into a rose garden.

My Project

My students are in need of headphones so that they can independently and quietly work on ipads during Literacy Centers. We currently only have 3 working headphones and because we are missing headphones, the noise from the ipads creates distractions for other students. Having enough headphones for every child in the Ipad Station will mean that each child will be able to independently listen to books read out loud without distracting others around them. Additionally, our classroom is in need of a classroom sharpener. We are currently sharpening pencils in the classroom next door after our sharpener broke, but it is not ideal since pencils break often.

Having a working pencil sharpener and enough headphones means that my students will be able to enjoy Literacy Centers and Writing time without noise distractions and the worry about not having sharpened pencils.

Additionally, we are in need of sheet protectors to practice sounding out words during whole group rug time. I plan on inserting phonics sheets with sound boxes and using white erase markers so that students can write and erase throughout each daily Phonics lesson.

We also are in need of bathroom passes and hall passes, tape to tape down sight words on our wall, and hole punchers for classroom projects and storing assessments in 3 ring binders.
