Head Phones for Math

Help me give my students noise blocking head phones for my middle school math class.

My Students

Our school is a middle level school with about 750 6th and 7th graders. We serve many groups of students including a high English as a second language population. Our students come from a range demographics. We have many low income and multi-family apartments. Even the kids from the local homeless shelter are bused to our school. We have kids getting up to catch the bus a good hour before school starts at 6 a.m. because they have to drive so far to get here. COVID has been especially hard on these students due to parental unemployment and the lack of access to online materials necessary for virtual learning.

My Project

Many students need questions read aloud to them in order to fully understand what is being taught. Students dislike wearing them if it means they stand out or look different than their peers.

Having a classroom set of noise blocking headphones would allow me to have everyone wear a pair.

This will allow students to listen to the questions without being singled out. It will also allow students to be less distracted by the surrounding noise. This will be especially helpful to our ESL and IEP population. These students often don't listen to problems because they don't want to stand out. By having all students wear headphones it will encourage everyone to use this additional resource.
