Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a Title I low income school which integrates students on the Autism Spectrum with their able bodied peers. Half of our school children have special needs and more than 90% get free lunch. My Kindergarten students are low functioning with Autism which makes focusing on schoolwork hard. My students have a lot of energy and want to change activities after a few moments. I would like an I-pad so my students can access their lessons in full color and animation which keeps them engaged.

I want to help my students with Autism be successful in life by helping them become more verbal through the use of an I-Pad to access special augmentative communication apps which allow them to "speak".

I also want to engage their fine motor skills through the use of puzzles and Legos. The apps allow my students to form complete sentences by choosing a sequence of engaging pictures. The system helps them to talk if they are nonverbal or supports their communication if they are struggling or muffled speakers.

My Project

An I-pad will allow my students to access their learning in living color and sound. I can "lock" or fix the I-Pad in their lesson so that they do not leave what I program for them. New puzzles and LEGO building blocks will help them improve their fine motor skills so their writing will improve.

A new I-Pad with a strap and case will be loaded with various apps that help children with autism learn to communicate, answer, questions, and identify common items in the school environment.
