Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students' views are developed by individual experiences. Teacher lectures are antiquated. Students learn more about historical events from their peers. My challenge this year is to help my students gain an appreciation for cultural diversity through Malala,a young schoolgirl's powerful voice.
Our school has an enrollment of 1,100 students pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
Approximately 10% of the student population receives special education services. Ninety four percent are considered low-income and receive free or reduced meals at school throughout the day. Student population is 84% Hispanic and 16% African American. Ten percent of our school population is considered Limited English Proficient. The average attendance rate is 97% truancy is 1% and the mobility rate is 17.8%. Because they live in a technological world, technology and media are the best ways to capture and sustain their learning through out the school day.
My Project
Socratic Seminar will help my students see themselves as a community created to help each other understand the ideas, issues and values reflected in He Named Me Malala. My students will facilitate the discussion around ideas they gained from watching the movie. Learning will occur as students listen closely to the comments of others, thinking critically for themselves, and articulate their own thoughts and their responses to the thoughts of others.
If we are ignorant of historical world events, viewpoints and experiences of a variety of cultures then we cannot hope to understand why people, communities or nations behave the way they do or make decisions they make.
The movie, He Named Me Malala, will quickly encourage my students to see the significance of getting a good education for a stronger future. I want students to enjoy reading and learning about world views and see how they can inspire others by living a productive life.
