My Students
Sometimes when a good or service is free, it is not appreciated or valued. This is sometimes the case with primary and secondary education in the United States.
Some of the students in our public school in Harlem view their education as a burdensome task that they are compelled to do, rather than their ticket to power (since, knowledge is power) and social mobility.
Some perceive school as a chore, rather than a means to knock down barriers and open doors of opportunity. Often when exposed to the educational system in developing countries, students become more cognizant of the advantages that our free public education provides them. For example, when a group of teachers and students visited schools in Ghana, our students developed a far greater appreciation for the resources and opportunities to learn that they had back home in our school.
My Project
This documentary, told by a courageous adolescent girl who had to fight for her right to an education, reminds us all that it is only through education that we can change the world. It also reminds us that each one of us has the potential to make a huge difference.
Through the words and lens of a peer - a peer who greatly values an education - this story motivates us to try our best and not undervalue or waste the advantages that we have here at home.
This documentary - timed perfectly at the commencement of a new school year - is the perfect way to energize and motivate our students for the challenges that lie ahead for them this year.
It will help to transform those challenges to opportunities for growth and personal development.
