Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There is only so much you can learn through reading, writing, and discussing literature. Help make learning come to life by sending students on a field trip to see a movie relevant to our unit.
My students are 120 passionate and curious 8th graders who are very interested in issues of justice.
They all qualify for free and reduced lunch. They are all students of color and they attend a middle school in a large urban district in California.
My Project
Students are completing a unit in which they are reading various texts to help them develop a definition of "heroism". They are doing a close read of a biographical article and a reflective art project inspired by Malala's story as they learn how she triumphed over obstacles and was fearless to achieve her goals. They will be able to refine their definition of heroism by providing examples from Malala's life about how she as a young woman in a tumultuous political situation gave voice to her community.
This project will help students connect to Malala on a personal level.
By watching this film, her story will come to life and they will see her as a relatable person who lives in a different country. It will also expand my students' worldview as they will gain access to understanding her experience in a very different social and political context.
