This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Who Inspires Me?" This prompt was part of a template I use for an auto-biographical poem in the first week of school. However, most of my new sixth graders were stumped--even a few admitted to me that no one inspires them. They need a real life example--like heroic Malala--to aspire to be like.
My students are wonderfully bright and inquisitive; they are full of life and potential and are incredibly resilient considering the obstacles many have faced.
We are part of a large school that has been split into two smaller ones this year due to poor MCAS results over a number of years. The test is not geared toward our urban students and is not a good indicator of their intellect, their skills, who they are as individuals, their character strengths, nor their potential for greatness.
My Project
My students will revel in the opportunity to attend an opening day documentary on the life of somehow so close to their own ages. Malala embodies the character traits we as a school culture try to instill: bravery, helping the defenseless, a "doer," intelligent, caring, knowledgeable, and a risk taker. My students both need to feel as though they are worth the investment to see He Named Me Malala, and they need someone like Malala to emulate in life: a true hero to inspire them.
Both the curriculum created and the documentary itself will allow students to see their own potential as someone who, like Malala, can make a difference in their own lives, in their communities, and in the world.
