Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine trying to publish a school newspaper with one desktop and no camera! This is what six enthusiastic newspaper reporters are faced with. Although, they can write their stories on paper, it is becoming incredibly challenging to convert it electronically with one computer.

These students are true pioneers due to the fact that they are going to publish the first paper our school has ever had!

These boys and girls are fourth and fifth graders who are passionate about writing. Learning the skills necessary to publish a newspaper will be a tremendous asset to each one of them. Most of these kids do not have computers or other media at home. Thus, the school is the only place they can learn important computing skills. These students are staying after school four hours a week to publish our paper. Their dedication in inspiring.

My Project

Without these donations, it will be difficult to publish a school newspaper. If we received the computers the students could learn important skills of formatting, editing, and creating a newspaper. In addition to the computing skills they will practice various modes of writing including interviewing, persuasive writing, short stories, and poems. Additionally, by having the camera they would be able to photograph special events at the school that could also be added to the paper.

My school is located in an urban, high poverty area.

Our playground is covered with graffiti and the area is littered with crime. Nevertheless, these children have a burning desire to learn and contribute to the school by participating in the newspaper club. The newspaper will also benefit the entire school, parents and community who will be able to be connected to our school through the stories in the paper.
