it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a new 5th grade teacher in New York. I work in a part of New York where children are lucky if they have some space to themselves at home. The school building I work in is where most the children from this community are able to “stretch” both their minds and bodies.
This is my first year with a classroom, my second year at this school. I am hoping to provide my students with a comfortable classroom environment that promotes being “at home” in their class but also evoking a sense of learning and inquiry.
Being my first year in the classroom, I have many ideas, a multitude of strategies and the desire to take it all in…what I lack? Supplies!
Every classroom in should have a rug where whole class instruction should be conducted. I do not have one, and I don't want to treat my students as though they don't deserve something new and colorful in their classroom...after all, other children in various schools are lucky to have such lovely supplies and furniture, why not mine? I want this space to be special, to signal children that this is where they will do their thinking, where time and space has been dedicated to them. A brand new rug will be a great place for them to think, produce and grow.
I think it will be wonderful to supply my students with the space to sit and learn, along with pride in their classroom…something they DO NOT get at home. The alternative is having the children sit on the floor, often complaining of it being cold, uncomfortable and lacking that sense of ownership they may feel towards their classroom. They may think, “what’s so special about learning this when I am sitting on this floor?”
With this said, I am asking for someone to donate the funds for this classroom rug. With your help, you will help me ensure that children that are not so lucky can know and appreciate what it means to be thought of. I am hoping that you can understand the impact of being thought of, what a strong message it will give to my students, and how it will help them take pride in their academics. Pride that I hope will carry them through 5th grade, and grow in middle school and onward.
