Having Reading Accessible to Every One of My Littles

My students need headphones and cases for our iPad Minis. Two of them also need noise-canceling headphones to minimize ambient noises, which aggravate learning issues.

My Students

"Fair doesn't mean equal." I have kiddos who can't deal with classroom noise, but I still want to allow active learning for the rest. Noise-canceling headphones will be fair to both. When they're done with work, they all love to grab a pillow and find a comfy nook to read or listen to a good book.

This is a middle-class neighborhood, deemed semi-rural even though the city proper has nearly 40,000 people.

That means my children tell me about their chickens and horses as well as their hoverboards and gymnastics lessons. They are hard-working and dependable, family traits that translate well to school. Our school has teachers teaching the children of their former students, creating a family-feeling school culture.

My Project

Reading is a vital skill, true, but I want my children truly to value it from a perspective of enjoyment, not as any drudgery of requirement. I want them to internalize reading as a go-to activity of choice. It seems to be working. When they're done with classwork, most love to grab a pillow and find a comfy nook to read a good book. For my children who are auditory processors, I want to provide books read aloud for them. ANY of my students are able to listen to books they'd love to read but which are above their reading skills. I have a few iPad Minis, but not headphones for them yet. With headphones and protective cases, any child in my class would be able to find a quiet corner and enjoy a good book, whether they can actually read it themselves. For my students for whom ambient noise is distressing, I need noise-reducing headphones. These children will, in time (I hope), learn coping skills to deal with these issues, but for now, I feel it's best to provide this resource.

By getting both kinds of headphones I can help every single child in my class.

The children who need less noise in order to perform their best in class will be given that blessing. Children who need to hear it to do their best learning will get that help as well. And my children who have neither need will merely gain another way to enjoy great books, which is not so mere, after all.
