My Students

I started teaching kindergarten 16 years ago and for the 2nd time in my entire career, I won't be teaching K-1 students! My new students are 3rd graders - Black and Latinx - who live on the southside of Chicago. The community has been hit hard by poverty and underdevelopment but the families who reside here (including myself) take pride in our children and have hope for their futures!

Although our school is in a low-income area, our children are not poor!

They have a lot to offer the world and need the opportunity and experiences that students in more affluent communities are afforded.

My Project

I have a VERY big class of 3rd graders - 30 to be exact and based on past trends, that number will likely increase. Our school district has remedies for oversized classes however they aren't immediate and can take some time. I do the best that I can but there simply isn't enough room for 30 medium bodies. Sometimes, I allow students to sit at my table (no more traditional teacher desk!) and I'd love to make it a comfortable and enjoyable experience to sit at the teacher's table.

I LOVE my new spinning chair and I think my students would love being able to sit in a "grown up" desk chair.

I am requesting 5 desk chairs - not for spinning - okay...sometimes...this will allow kids to sit in a comfortable chair while they are working and get some movement breaks during their busy and cramped day.
