Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students meet and exceed my expectations every day, but our lack of materials makes it hard for them to continue to move forward. While our courses are focused on instrumental music, I stress musical literacy across all genres. Our bands play music ranging from Eminem to Beethoven.
Next year, the music program will reach over 100 students (roughly a third of the school's population), and is growing steadily.
While 96% of the Class of 2014 graduated from high school in 4 years and 96% of those students enrolled in college, 35% of their families earn less than $15,000 per year and almost 50% of children in our area live in poverty. 94% of our students qualify for free or reduced cost lunch. My music students are highly motivated to learn and push their abilities every day, but they are limited by our lack of resources. This project will help more of our students to participate in music.
My Project
These items will help my flute, trombone, and keyboard students with instrument maintenance, posture, and technique.
Our keyboardists currently use folding chairs, and cannot sit at the correct height for the pianos.
That means they struggle to use correct posture and technique! The benches will help them correct those problems!
Flute can be a very challenging instrument to start on, because of the specific balance points, so the Bo-Pep flute thumb guides and finger rests will help our students to correctly hold the flute. The trombone care kit will help keep our trombones functioning correctly, and the woodwind spring hook will make in-class instrument repairs faster, maximizing instruction time!
One of the most important tools in a musician's arsenal is the metronome. These devices will help our students to practice playing in time, which will better their musicianship.
