My Students
Our school is located in one of the most economically depressed congressional districts in our country. To complicate matters, the Mayor and Chancellor recently announced that we are facing additional budget cuts for next semester.
We service a multicultural, diverse and disadvantaged population of students, primarily from the surrounding New York neighborhood.
We have a very large Special Needs population, as well as many recent immigrants. In order to foster school spirit and a sense of community, we use sports and other social events.
With the help of generous donors like you, I have been able to acquire tennis equipment to create an after-school tennis club. My students have been given a chance to learn the game of tennis, sportsmanship, and how to work together as a team. They look forward to going out to the courts every chance they can get.
My Project
Every year we read about young athletes who over-exert themselves. Some suffer muscle pulls, strains, heat stroke, etc. And on rare occasions, some suffer heart attacks. Unfortunately, my tennis club is not officially recognized by the PSAL organization. As such, I have not been allotted an AED (Automated Electronic Defibrillator) machine in case of emergencies. Budget cuts have forced my school to eliminate all but the bare essentials.
My project calls for an AED unit to ensure that my students will get fast, safe medical treatment in the event of heart failure. I hope that I never have the need to use the AED , but I also believe that one should be prepared and equipped to handle any emergency. Having easy access to an AED unit can be the difference between life and death.
With your help, I can bring the joy of tennis to a group of urban students who would not normally have the opportunity to learn and play this wonderful game.
