My Project
At HG, my students are bright, curious, and eager to learn, but many face significant challenges. As a Title I school in a low-income neighborhood, resources are often limited, and many students lack access to hands-on, experiential learning outside the classroom. Despite these obstacles, they come to school each day with a hunger for knowledge and a passion for discovery.
A chicken coop would provide them with an exciting, hands-on learning opportunity that goes beyond textbooks.
Many of our students struggle with engagement due to limited exposure to real-world applications of science and math. Caring for chickens would teach them responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. They would explore life cycles, ecosystems, and sustainable food practices while developing critical thinking and observation skills.
This project would also help students develop a sense of ownership and pride in their school. Many of them face instability at home, and having a project they can nurture and watch grow will foster a sense of stability and accomplishment. Each resource—from feed to housing—will play a role in shaping their understanding of agriculture, biology, and environmental responsibility. This chicken coop isn’t just about raising chickens; it’s about raising confident, capable learners who see the world as full of possibilities.
