This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Throughout the year, my sweet Kindergarten students and I have done many experiments using chicken eggs. Each time, students have hypothesized that they thought chickens would hatch!

I teach 21 Kindergarten students in New Mexico at a Title One school that is 100% free lunch and breakfast.

We are in a high-need community and poverty is a very real issue for most of my students. Several of my students are learning English as a second language.

My Project

We have been studying life cycles this year and have many class pets that we watch grow and change including tadpoles, frogs, a tarantula, a leopard gecko, gerbils, ladybugs, praying mantises, butterflies, and crickets. My students are begging me to watch a chicken hatch. Unfortunately, budget cuts have left us without some of the staple items we need, so purchasing an incubator with district money is out of the question. With an incubator, my students can watch chicks hatch, and journal about it in their science journals. We are studying animals and life cycles, and this would be a perfect tie-in to our curriculum. I know my students will LOVE it!
