Hatching Chicks in the Classroom

My Project

Third grade is a tough year for most students-it is the first time they take a state test. In my state, our third graders have to pass their reading test to move on to the next grade. They work so very hard all year long!!! So, when spring rolls around, I try to give them all the fun experiences! We have observed the life cycles of ladybugs, mealworms, frogs, butterflies, ants, earthworms, snails and my favorite, CHICKENS!

My students LOVE watching the chicks hatch from their eggs, it is such an enjoyable experience for them!

We learn how truly amazing an egg is & how every part is made to care for & protect the chick. We also learn about the anatomy of a chicken, how to care for them properly & most importantly, how to respect life! I have former students who still stop by to ask if we are hatching chicks this year. It is so rewarding to know I have given them an experience that has made a lasting impression!

I have always had to borrow an incubator and a brooder for this special time of year, some years I haven't been able to give my students this experience because I was not able to borrow an incubator. It is so disappointing because I know how much joy it brings to them. Their faces light up and I have even had some students cry happy tears when "their" egg hatches! This project will benefit students for years!
