Hatching Chicken Eggs and Learning How to Be Responsible

My Students

My school is amazing! We have wonderful staff, parents and the students in my classroom are fantastic! I teach in a blended classroom which means I have students ranging from ages 3-5. I have 20 students in my AM session and 19 students in my PM session. The majority of my students are general education students; however, 1/3 of my students are students with special needs.

I love observing the interactions between my students because at this age no one sees any differences, everyone is treated the same and everyone is included.

It doesn't matter if some students have limited speech, cognitive impairments, or health-related concerns. We modify and differentiate our curriculum so every student can apply what is learned, participate, and succeed.

My Project

Every year as a class we incubate chicken eggs. Depending on the batch, some years we have many eggs hatch and unfortunately some years we only have a few baby chicks hatch.

My students look forward to this experience and I am hoping with a new incubator, brooder box, and associated activities that we will have a 100% hatch!

My students each pick an egg and number it. They care for this egg for the 21 days (incubation) as well as name it. Once the chick hatches they feed, water, and clean the brooder box. If an egg does not hatch, we discuss adoption and students are able to co-parent a chick and raise them together. We keep the chicks in our classroom in a brooder box for one week after they hatch. After this time, our chicks are relocated to a nearby farm. My students are also expressing an interest in building. I am hoping that the Brio Builder Creative Set will help spark some great creations and "assist" with assembling our new brooder box.
