Hat-tastic Harmony: Celebrating What Makes Us Unique

My Project

The students at my school are extremely diverse. Each comes from a different type of family and home life. Sometimes, it is hard for them to understand another student's perspective. This project would allow students to celebrate their differences by learning more about each other and creating a trucker hat to express their interests and cultural beliefs. Included in this project are some highly recommended texts to introduce students to diverse ways of life such as "Where Are You From" by Yamile Saied Mendez and "What If We Were All the Same" by C.M. Harris. It would also bring in a bulk of baseball caps, a variety of iron on patches, and a hat press machine.

Not only will this project allow for self-expression, but it will also encourage empathy and respect, support social and emotional learning, and foster a sense of belonging.

One of the goals for this project is to encourage students to reflect on their interests, values, and identities to create a visual representation of what makes them unique. While learning what makes them unique, they will also be learning how to appreciate others diverse interests through the stories selected for this project. This will help students form deeper connections with one another by finding shared interests and learning to value differences.
