Harvey's Herpetarium

Help me give my students an aquarium, stand and necessary habitat supplies, including basking spot, humidifier, thermometer/humidity gauge, food dishes, and environment so they can develop a true reptile habitat for our classroom pet, Mr. Leopard Gecko!

My Project

This year, my fourth grade class will be diving into habitats. Part of our Missouri state standards for 4th grade requires us to use models to describe how animals use their senses, as well as identify and understand the needs of certain animals and what should be present in their environment.

In the spirit of bringing life science into our classroom, I have procured a leopard gecko, named Harvey, and want to let my students construct and create a perfect habitat for him.

This opportunity for the kids to get hands-on experience caring for a living creature is sure to ingrain the importance of the delicate nature of our environment, as well as allow them the chance to develop the skills of observing and recording information, while using the scientific method.

To help accomplish this, I am requesting the following items: An Exo Terra glass terrarium for him to live in, a storage cabinet to set the terrarium on and store supplies for him in, an Evergreen humidifier/fogger to keep the air at an appropriate moisture level, a thermometer/hygrometer to monitor moisture and temperature levels, Zoo med tropical lighting kit and bulbs to provide the proper amount of light, shale step ledge, bendable branch/bark, sphagnum moss, reptavines and substrate to create a habitat as close to natural as possible, mealworm, freeze dried crickets and calcium with vitamin D supplements to ensure proper diet, heat mat for warmth, a Gecko manual and log book to help learn all of the important things about caring for Geckos and recording the daily observations of our Gecko. The nice thing about this is that we will be able to use these items for years to come, so many other students will benefit.
