My Students

My elementary school is in central Florida. We are starting a new 4H Club on campus after school with 26 eager learners in our newest club on campus. They are enthusiastic to be in the club and embrace every new task and skill that is introduced to them. They like to sing, play in centers, and learn all about reading and math.

We are a Title I school.

We have about 93 percent of our students that receive free or reduced-rate lunches. Most come from homes with single parents, a grandparent, or other family members are raising them. The saddest situations are where the students are in a homeless situation.

My Project

Our 4H children need a rabbit hutch large enough to house and safely secure our rabbit. Harvey is our latest addition to the classroom. He now lives in a cramped wire rabbit cage and is outgrowing that quickly. It is also important for Harvey to be kept separate from Rosie.

The students are learning about the care of domestic rabbits.

They clean the cage every week. The students enjoy feeding Harvey and giving him fresh water every day. Needless to say, Harvey is quickly learning to love attention. Our students love to pet and hold him safely.

Some of our students do not have animals at home. They are not allowed to have pets and having Harvey in the classroom gives the students an opportunity to care for an animal. By giving the students this hands-on experience with live animals, they will learn to love and respect animals they come into contact with during their lives.
