This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I school in Houston, Texas that was highly affected by Hurricane Harvey. We have been relocated twice, and we lost most of our resources, including our library and our guided reading kits.
My students are lovely, very active, curious and book-loving, but many of them are struggling readers with lack of support at home.
The majority of my students don't have access to books at home. They come from a primarily immigrant community where 99% of them receive free breakfast, lunch and a snack. Many of our students' parents did not get the opportunity to have a higher level of education, and some don't even know how to read or write.
My Project
The leveled books and the shelves will help me create a nice and motivational classroom library! I will organize the books by level in colorful and labeled bins. With this classroom library, students will choose books to read independently during the Read to Self time.
Getting books at their reading level will give my students the opportunity to improve their reading skills and grow as readers.
My students love to read and enjoy reading to themselves and reading with a partner. They take care of books and treat them carefully. I allow them to take books to read at home every week. When they are able to read the book, each student has the opportunity to read aloud to their classmates. They track their reading on a chart and in their own booklets.
