My students need Harry Potter books for a bit of escapism and fantasy to help them increase their reading ability and to help them dream and imagine outside of their circumstances.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 25 of the most amazing 4th graders who are a perfect mixture of general education and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay for after school so they can have dinner as well. Even though we come from a very rough neighborhood, you wouldn't know it by interacting with my students.
I have quite a few students who are homeless and have to live in shelters.
Whether due to an abusive parent, or a parent being arrested by ICE, my students have had to encounter the reality of being homeless and living in situations that I just can't imagine. This is the reality of the students that I am lucky enough to call mine.
My students need to know what is going on in the world, not just the 10 square blocks of their neighborhood. They are wonderful students, but can sometimes just see the world from their circumstances, and that is limiting. They need to know that the world is big and full of opportunities.
My Project
The New York Historical Society is having a special exhibit on Harry Potter. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Part 2 is coming out right before Thanksgiving. Knowing that both of these events are happening, I thought it would be great to have a Harry Potter Reading Challenge.
Little ones today would rather be on their devices, watch YouTube, or play Fortnite than read a book.
When I first started teaching 20 years ago, my students loved Harry Potter. I want to hook my students all over again with Harry Potter.
For any student who reads at least one of these Harry Potter books, they will get to go on the field trip to the New York Historical Society to see the Harry Potter exhibit. For any student who reads three Harry Potter Books, they get to go see the Fantastic Beasts Movie. For any student who reads all the Harry Potter Books, I will give a Gift Card for either movies, itunes, or books out of my treasure chest.
