My students are struggling readers. Last year they did not perform proficiently on the state standardized test. Over 75 percent of my class is reading below grade level. I am looking for a class set of high interest books to grab my students attention and help them fall in love with reading!
I have 28 students in a North Philadelphia public school.
Despite the hurdles they have to overcome such as poverty and crime, they love to read. Our school does not receive a lot of books. All of the books in my library have come from thrift stores, friends, used book stores, and my own personal library. I have been teaching for five years so my books have been read and reread and they are showing a lot of wear and tear.
My Project
I am asking for 30 copies of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" to use as a read aloud. I have the audiobook and would play the storytelling of Jim Dale while my students follow along in their own books. While they are enjoying the high fantasy and adventure they will also be listening to a proficient reader, be introduced to new and interesting vocabulary, create mental images, and fall in love with new characters and friends. I also like the strong, positive, female role model of Hermione Granger to influence young girls.
I really hope that you will choose to support my Harry Potter Proficiency Project.
With your help, I will be able to introduce my students to a new genre and get them interested in reading. My goal is to instill in them a lifelong love of reading. If children can read they WILL be successful. Help me help them to succeed.
