it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The students absolutely adore making music! Music represents a decidedly positive part of their lives. It is amazing to watch them concentrate to solve legitimate musical and dramatic problems. Their beaming glow of satisfaction when they master a skill or learn a new song is priceless to witness.
Music is one of the major motivating factors for being at school and engaging with all subject areas.
We are a Title I (high poverty) school in Texas. Despite economic hardships, at school the students get the opportunity to interact with authentic instruments and music in meaningful ways. This has a tremendous influence on their lives.
Having printed music books will help the students by giving them a well-thought-out sequential set of learning tunes to learn to play harmonica. The Happy Harmonica Children's Song books progress the students in a steady, but non-rushed pace toward proficiency on their instruments. The activities and music in the book are perfectly suited for elementary music. Students learn together how to listen, perform, and create.
Harmonica education is rooted in social justice by emphasizing access, equity, and rigor for populations who may not have had access to or interest in music education in schools in the past. The instrument is inexpensive and culturally relevant to all people. Through instruments like the harmonica, formerly disempowered populations can find that they have a voice to speak out against injustices. We're not just teaching an instrument; we're changing the world one child at a time.
