This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a school which the state defines as "failing." But these students are not quitters. This year alone, among our students we have Posse scholars, a Questbridge Scholar, and a number of other academic honors.

At all levels, my students are trying hard to achieve.

Were you to walk down the halls of my school, you might think you are in the United Nations. We have students from five continents (and more than that number of islands) representing a diverse array of languages and cultures.

My Project

I am interested in Empowering Students Through Art. If I were to mention Pythagoras to most people, they would immediately think of right triangles. Fewer people are aware of the ancient Greek philosopher's work relating musical harmonies to rational numbers. I would like to guide my students through explorations similar to what the Pythagoreans did two millennia ago, looking at musical notes, pleasing harmonics, and the relationship to rational numbers. Even the most math phobic student is likely to warm to euphonic combinations of sounds. In order to reproduce the Pythagorean experiments I am requesting a ukulele, whose strings will be our tone generator. I am also requesting visual output tuners so students can see exactly what frequencies are being created. I have also included a case for the ukulele and some spare strings.

I try to make sure a lack of supplies won't hold my students back, and as much as possible, I try to introduce technology and real-world situations to their studies.

By funding this project, allowing my students to explore the humanities through the arts, you will help my students get ready for the world.
