Harlem Students Develop Financial Literacy

My students need the learning board game BANK ACCOUNT, ear buds for an online Financial Literacy program, and a USB hub for our classroom laptop.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Viau's classroom raised $470

My Students

My students are incredibly hard-working. They have chosen to challenge themselves academically by taking Personal Financial Literacy to learn about financial planning. budgeting, savings and investments, credit and credit scores, paying for college, borrowing, insurance, calculating income taxes and saving for retirement. This class uses financial math to learn life skills. The goal is to develop into a productive member of society and learn how to growth wealth and become financially independent.

My students realize that a solid education is the key to financial independence and career success.

All of these students are minorities and most live at or below the poverty level. They have big plans for their lives. They have the intellect and the work ethic to make those dreams become a reality. The seek social mobility and true personal freedom.

My Project

My two classes of students enrolled in Personal Financial Literacy have enrolled in the EVERFI sponsored Personal Financial Literacy online certification course. The course involves nine topics: Savings; Banking; Payment Types; Credit Scores; Higher Education; Renting Vs. Owning; Insurance and Taxes; Consumer Protection; and Investing. Each course involves a student self-paced tutorial with interactive activities which culminates in a unit exam. My students need ear buds to listen to the tutorials. Since the program is self-paced, each student will work at their own speed.

In addition to the student-paced online program, my students will practice their new banking skills by engaging in the board game BANK ACCOUNT.

This game is a realistic simulation of true-to-life money management demands. Students will write checks, made deposits, keep accurate records and reconcile accounts. Real-life transactions include paying medical expenses, grocery bills, utility bills and legal bills, property tax and other bills. Students make purchases, collect earning, deposit tax refunds, receive scholarship money and more.

Lastly, my class needs a USB hub to connect our lap top to both the external hard drive, the internet and the SMART Board so that we can utilize interactive lesson plans.
