Harlem Scholars Prep for AP Statistics Success!

Help me give my students quality review books to prepare properly for the Advanced Placement Statistics exam, colored pencils to score one another's practice questions, binder clips to keep our work organized and a globe for an activity.

My Students

My students are hard-working scholars who have opted to take my Advanced Placement Statistics course. These students in our college-preparatory public high school located in Harlem plan to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and pursue a career in medicine, engineering, business, psychology, criminology, social work, teaching, and more.

These students have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives.

They realize that education is their key to a better life, and they are willing to prioritize their education. Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level. They realize that a solid education is key to financial independence and career success.

My Project

I have high hopes for this year's class of dedicated scholars. The students who chose to take my rigorous course are ready for a challenge.

The materials in this funding request will help my students to engage in fun learning activities, learn from one another's work product and practice review questions for the ultimate AP exam in May 2020.

This is my 14th year teaching AP Statistics and I've loved every minute of it. This is a demanding class, but it is a blast to teach.

The beach ball is going to be used in a fun inference based activity. We will throw the beach ball around and test the claim that about two-thirds of the earth's surface is covered in water.

The twistable colored pencils will be used when we practice free response questions. First the students complete the question with a timer set, then we switch papers, once we've reviewed the rubric provided by The College Board we grade one another's work. This leads to rich conversations about scoring for various responses and we discuss how to strengthen communication in responses. We've done so many questions that our twistables are all running out!

The review books are structured for the new configuration of units in this course. The review books are being released on December 15, so if this is funded we'll be first adopters! I've used the Crash Course books very successfully in the past and I have no doubt that this year's version will be excellent.

Lastly, the binder clips will help students keep their various assignments and projects together.
