My Students
My students are hard-working scholars who have opted to take one of my Advanced Placement Statistics courses [Statistics or Microeconomics]. These students in our college-preparatory public high school located in Harlem plan to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and pursue a career in medicine, engineering, business, psychology, criminology, social work, teaching, and more.
These students have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives.
They realize that education is their key to a better life, and they are willing to prioritize their education. Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level. They realize that a solid education is a key to financial independence and career success.
My Project
My students have ambition. My students have perseverance and the willingness to work hard. My students seek to earn college credit by earning a high enough score on the AP exam in May. However, based on my diagnostic exams at course commencement, virtually all of my students have entered the course without many of the requisite skill set prior to embarking on this AP endeavor.
Regardless of their deficit in prior pre-requisite skills, my students and I have made a pact to become properly prepared for the the AP exam in May; this necessitates spending time on supplemental instruction and test prep outside of regularly scheduled class time.
To this end, we meet after school for two additional hours per week and also on Saturdays for two hours. Furthermore, we have agreed to meet 4 times during spring break. These students are dedicated and determined to succeed. I am willing to give up my discretionary time to help build them into the scholars that they are fully capable to becoming. All told, I've scheduled an additional 80 instructional hours outside of class time between these two AP classes.
These snacks will help keep my students focused. Students can't learn while hungry. These snacks will keep them filled up and also serve as a treat for spending so much extra time in the classroom doing extra work.
