My Students

My students are hard-working scholars who have opted to take my Syracuse University Project Advance Personal Finance Class. These students in our college-preparatory public high school located in Harlem plan to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and pursue a career in medicine, engineering, business, psychology, criminology, social work, teaching, and more.

These students are willing to prioritize their education.

They realize that education is their key to a better life. Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level. They have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives. They realize that a solid education is the key to financial independence and career success.

My Project

This year our school is offering a personal finance course through Syracuse University Project Advance for the first time. The 40 scholars who have elected to take this course will learn the basics of financial planning, budgeting, financing for college, wise use of credit, how to prepare taxes, and how insurance covers financial risk.

Having just gotten certified as an adjunct professor at Syracuse University this past summer, I am completely jazzed up to introduce this course, which is basically on "Adulting", to our students.

The students who perform well will learn relevant and essential life skills as well as earn 3 credits at S.U.

Since we will be conducting many group activities in class, the students will be collecting a lot of handouts. The sturdy plastic folders [in one of the colors of Syracuse University -- navy blue] will help students keep those handouts organized for future reference, for later in this course and for later in life. The poster boards will be utilized to present a variety of group projects. The novelty items will be used as rewards for exemplary work.

The various personal finance books will be available in a class library in the classroom. Students will be able to sign books out and further supplement the personal finance coursework that we cover in class. I have selected a variety of books, all of which are geared towards teens and young adults, to engage different types of students.

The two DVDs will be shown in class. BROKE investigates the lessons learned from professional football players who mismanaged their finances and went bankrupt despite having million dollar contracts. Hidden Figures is intended as motivation for my female students of color to pursue STEM occupations.
