My Students
My students are hard-working scholars who have opted to take one of my Advanced Placement courses [Microeconomics or Statistics]. These students in our college-preparatory public high school located in Harlem plan to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and pursue a career in medicine, engineering, business, psychology, criminology, social work, teaching, and more.
These students have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives.
They realize that education is their key to a better life, and they are willing to prioritize their education. Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level. They realize that a solid education is a key to financial independence and career success.
My Project
Every single one of the seniors in my two Advanced Placement classes is planning to attend college. The applications are in. We are now awaiting the results. Admissions are trickling in. It is an exciting time. However, it is also a scary time.
Virtually all of my seniors will be First-Gen college students; they don't have family members that they ask about the realities of college life.
This book provides excellent and realistic advice. It is written by college students for college students. It "keeps it real". It offers advice on a wide range of topics including communicating with professors, reading a syllabus, managing time, dealing with homesickness and negotiating with roommates.
My students have a lot of questions. Help me to provide some solid advice so that they can go off to college with confidence.
