We are a small charter school that started our rabbit breeding program with one purebred mini-lop rabbit named Ms. Matilda. We got Ms. Matilda two weeks before Covid-19 shut down schools across the nation.
As students returned to in-person learning Ms. Matila was utilized as a therapy rabbit for students with anxiety about returning to school.
We noticed that as our students interacted with Ms. Matilda they were able to make it through the day with less stress and very few out-of-classroom breaks. As a school, we decided we needed more rabbits. Our rabbit population has grown from one to 16 and it is continuing to grow as the students learn how to take care of the rabbits. Several students now own their own rabbits' and we are starting our own breeding program.
We have an after-school Bunny club where students that want to learn more about the care of rabbits can also learn showmanship and husbandry. Many of our students that participate in our after-school activity also engage in breeding the rabbits and participating in state-wide rabbit competitions. Three of our students competed in our 2022 State Fair competition.
Thursday is rabbit day at the school and students can bring their pet rabbits to school for the day. Students can have a rabbit on their table or in their lap as they do work. This is beneficial to both the student and the rabbit. We now have a room dedicated to housing our rabbit population and we have a rabbit for every room that requests one. Having the proper equipment will allow us to create a safe and healthy environment for our rabbits and our students.
