My Students
Try to recall the times you've sat through a presentation or lecture. How difficult was it to stay focused? Now try to imagine sitting through it while seated on a cold hard floor with your legs crossed, hands folded in your lap, and sitting straight up. That's what my third graders do EVERYDAY!
My third graders are a brilliant, hard working group of 32 students in a Gifted and Talented program.
They are thirsty for knowledge and are always eager to learn. They seem to have a good grasp on what hard work means and they absolutely loves to be challenged!
My Project
My eager learners try very hard not to squiggle and squirm at the meeting area--they really do! But I have experienced sitting on rugs at meeting areas in a number of classrooms and I don't know how they do it! I just can't imagine how they can get through an entire year without something to sit on.
I am requesting these vinyl cushions because they are easier to keep clean, they do not collect dust so it alleviates allergic reactions, they do not collect bugs, the cushions can be moved around easily for different seating arrangements, and they have more padding than a carpet so my students will be more comfortable. All of these qualities combined can only result in positive, focused learning and community building! The colorful assortments are also a benefit--I already envision a myriad of lessons that can be done with the cushions, such as 'telling time' and 'noticing patterns.' The benefits of these cushions are endless!
School is a place of comfort and joy.
If I can do anything to cultivate that love for learning and community, I will. These cushions alone will probably do more for my students than you or I think it will. And their achy bottoms will no longer be!
