This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Some of my students come to school having never been in preschool. These students come missing skills that would help them be successful in their first days of kindergarten.
Our school is located in a low-income, high poverty area that is predominantly Spanish-speaking.
It is an area in which violence occurs daily and its proximity to oil refineries cause health issues. Our school is a place where the children can come and know that they are safe and protected. We strive to give them a place where they can learn without worry or fear. We are lucky to have Breakfast in the Classroom program ,which feeds our children breakfast in addition to the free lunch offered to every child in our school. Even though the students in my class live in this type of environment they come to school excited to learn and love to get time to explore exciting new materials!
My Project
My students will use playdough to build fine motor skills by rolling it, grabbing it, molding it, and fashioning it into the shapes or letters they desire. Each student will be able to use 1-2 containers on their own while they work on these valuable skills. In addition to the molds and cutting materials I am requesting I use worksheets in sheet protectors to give them extra practice with learning words and letters. It helps them learn how to spell words and practice letter formation!
Some of my students have a hard time writing their name neatly or cutting on a straight line.
And, it's frustrating for them! Manipulating playdough gives helps them to build the strength they need to be able to cut and write more neatly!
