Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergarten students are full of energy! They come in chatting and telling me all their stories. I want them to turn these oral stories into written works of art that they can keep forever. The biggest challenge for a Kindergarten teacher is to get the students to believe in their stories.

My students will be 25-Kindergarten students.

My students are ELL students. They are native Spanish speakers, and they are learning English at school. Our student population is 99% Mexican-American, ELL learners, and 100% free or reduced lunch. Our school is in a tough Chicago neighborhood plagued by crime, violence, and poverty.

My Project

My students need writing journals, writing paper, crayons, watercolor paints, and brushes. My students will create writing journals where they can record all their "small moments" from their daily lives. They will create illustrations in their journals. They will also be able to create pictures separately and use the watercolors to enhance the illustrations. These illustrations will be cut out and glued into their writing journals. I love the idea of them practicing their writing, story telling, drawing, coloring, cutting, and gluing skills. Students will learn to match their writing to their illustrations. They will learn that their stories are a treasure to record and keep as a moment forever!

We really need the Donors Choose donations because funding at our public sSchool does not allow for an abundance of writing paper or drawing supplies.

Students need the opportunity to practice their writing and illustrating skills in Kindergarten. We go through a lot of paper and crayons. Your donations will make our writing practice a reality!
