This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My classroom consists of students who are autistic. My goal is to create an environment that would provide an emotional social relaxation atmosphere to soothe students who are anxious and need a calm environment. Each student is special in their own individual way. The items I have selected, would facilitate learning for my students in helping them emotionally in the classroom, as well as providing them with a calm therapeutic state. Due to my students' developmental stage and lack of communication (non-verbal), they enjoy playing with scooters, having sensory boards, magnetic boards, cushions and pillows. What makes my students special is having each child communicate using total body communication control. Due to their non-verbal skills, each child finds it difficult to communicate verbally, therefore each child likes to see different items of interest around the classroom, for them to feel safe, welcome and soothe their anxiety. Most of my students exhibit anxiety emotions and aren't able to verbally express their feelings, therefore they exhibit aggression towards self or others. By having these social emotional and Mental health items in the classroom, they would facilitate the students by calming and soothing their emotions/feelings. Students who are non-verbal, have a hard time expressing their feelings or emotions, and find it difficult to communicate with others. These items would help our students alleviate their feelings and feel relaxed around the classroom when exhibiting their emotions. It would also serve as an extra support for their learning environment.
