Do you remember what was fun about 1st grade? I want my children to always remember 1st grade. Due to inadequate funding for classroom materials, we lack technology that will enhance a child's academic growth. My students will be able to remember this childhood experience for many years to come.
I have 21 students who are in the Optional program in a Memphis city school.
They are able to read and comprehend above grade level. Most are able to do mathematic skills above grade level as well. My students are able to move at a swifter pace than the average classroom. I believe in challenging them to do things they don't think they are able to accomplish. The smile on their faces after they succeed is priceless.
My Project
With the materials that will be provided through this program, my students will have the opportunity to create an End of the Year book to chronicle their 1st grade year. They will use the skills they have learned in LangArts to write a story. They will take real life pictures to add creativity to their masterpiece. We will create a book for each student that tells their life in 1st grade. The students will learn a simple format in writing and illustrating a book. My students need 2 digital cameras, a photo printer, photo paper and copy paper to create their 1st grade masterpiece: Picture Me in 1st grade. These items will allow the student's books to look more like books they read daily.
After completing this project, my students will learn that they are a published author and illustrator.
They will be able to show ownership in this project and share it with others. This will be a project they will always remember. They will have a piece of 1st grade with them forever!
