Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are a wonderful group of fifth and sixth graders who are excited to come to school and learn. They always bring a smile to my face and I absolutely love learning with them. Our students come from a high-poverty neighborhood so more than 75% of them receive free or reduced-price lunch at school. There is a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single-parent, multiple-family, foster, migrant, and military families, to name a few. Our students also come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, with a large portion being Hispanic, Punjabi, and African American. Additionally, we have a large population of English Language Learners.
Math can be a difficult subject that students quickly get frustrated and give up on, but with the use of fun math manipulatives things can change!
During math, we are working on making it more hands-on to help the students gain a deeper understanding and also see the problems in a new way. We are requesting a variety of math manipulatives from play-dough to straws, pipe cleaners, and base 10 pieces. With all of these little pieces, we need something to organize them with which is why we are requesting zippered pouchs. The pouches will allow us to store materials but also have easy access to them.
On top of just using the manipulatives for everyday math, later, students will be assigned a group of manipulatives to create a product from. They will then have to price this product, create a sales pitch, and learn about gains, losses, profits, and the cost of materials. This will give the students an understanding of financial literacy.
